CANDIDATE FOR REGIONAL DIRECTOR, WESTERN APPALACHIAN REGION

To all active patrollers of the Western Appalachian Region:

Over my 35 years as a patroller (I can’t believe it’s been that long – I’m only 53) I’ve experienced many aspects of patrolling – student patroller, senior program, OEC Instructor, candidate trainer, and more. I was a member of our patrol board for many years and server as treasurer and president/patrol director. I served six years as the Southern Section Chief, and more recently have been the regional election chairman and lift evac advisor.

So what kind of role you can expect from me as Regional Director? I plan to visit as many patrols as I can to meet, talk and listen to your concerns about the patrol. I’ve met many of you over the years though the senior program, OEC instructor, or as section chief.

It is my goal to create more involvement, more enthusiasm, and more camaraderie among our members. Patrollers should be encouraged to improve their skills, but also encouraged to get to know other patrollers outside of their own patrols.

Steve Schopfer, and before him, Guy Lombardo, put an incredible amount of time into the RD job, and it showed in improved regional activities and programs. We have a strong and dedicated staff of advisors in the region, most notably Ken Schweinsberg who heads the OEC program, and Bob Snoby and Bill Smith who handle the senior program. These are the most visible members of the region staff. Many others contribute countless hours to make sure you are the best patroller you can be. With their help, the Western Appalachian Region is second to none in the Eastern Division. I hope to keep us that way.
