Instructor Development for
Region Newsletter New Face on Phase I
Course By Ann Rahn Ten
Patrollers came together at WISP in March to experience the new/revised
Instructor Development course. It received rave reviews, especially the
student role-playing, the complementary teaching styles of the three
instructors and Pat's rendition of a Poor Instructor. I was told he had
them rolling in the aisles with laughter. At
least one more course is scheduled before the start of the skiing season.
7 Springs will be our host this summer, well before the OEC Refreshers get
underway. Other courses can be scheduled at any patrol location that has
six interested students. We can even put a course together for several
patrols at a central location to minimize travel. Remember, this course is a
prerequisite for potential instructors in any NSP discipline (S&T,
Mountaineering, OEC, etc.). If
you are interested in attending the 7 Springs course, or want to take a
Leadership Development course at another location this summer or fall, contact
me at 703-241-1587 or ANNRINVA@AOL.COM. |

The
WAR Student Program is alive and well at Blue Knob Ski Patrol. We now have four
new student patrollers. Last year we tried to link up
with the Southern Division Student Seminar, but it was cancelled due to lack of
interest. If any patrols have students and
would like to participate in a WAR Student Seminar, please contact me
at hmarlett@charter.net |

2002 - 2003 MOUNTAINEERING AND
AVALANCHE PROGRAM DAVE SHAEFFER, REGIONAL A &
M ADVISOR In
an ironic twist of fate, one of the best skiing seasons in recent history
worked against the mountaineering and avalanche program. Patrollers in
Western Appalachia were so busy patrolling that efforts to fill basic classes
failed early in the season. Finally in March of this year with the assistance of Seven
Springs, courses in "Fundamental Mountain Travel and Rescue" (old circle M) and
"Mountain Avalanche Awareness" (old circle A) were filled. For
mountaineering, 12 students enrolled and for avalanche 15 students
enrolled. Representation was primarily from Seven Springs with 3 from
Hidden Valley and 2 from Mystic Mountain. Unfortunately, it was too late in the season to schedule a
Mountain Patch Course which requires two nights of winter camping and two days
of travel on Nordic skis. A
bright spot in last season's program was a joint exercise with the Nordic
patrollers. In October of 2002, an all day exercise was held around
Hidden Valley in which 14 patrollers and 5 instructors participated. Nine
of the 15 students camped out overnight. Our thanks to our Regional
Director, Guy who provided steak dinners. The M & A program provided
beverages. A
note of thanks to assisting instructors this last season; Dan
Schwartzentruber and Mike Logsdon of Wisp, George Wolfe and Jerry Timcik
of Hidden Valley Nordic and Ann Rahn of Laurel Mountain Nordic. |
